Visteon workers are fighting now and urgently need your support! Latest from the Factory Occupations

Topics:

The representatives of the 600 sacked Visteon UK workers – from the three affected plants, Basildon, Belfast and Enfield – all attended negotiations with Visteon international executives, who flew from the US for the meeting on Wednesday 15 April. Also present were senior Unite officials.
The workers at Enfield had ended their occupation of their factory last week in the light of the possession order against them, fears that the police might try to evict them violently, and in anticipation of a significant financial offer from Visteon.
In the event, on Wednesday the Visteon UK workers were offered a derisory package of 13 weeks pay, which is only what the company should have paid them if it had honoured its statutory redundancy commitments, but tried to evade by putting the UK company into receivership. Unite has rejected this ‘offer’. Although they will attend any further negotiations, the Visteon workers of all three plants are resolved to fight on.
Belfast are still in occupation; in Basildon and Enfield they have mounted a round the clock picket of their factories. They want to maintain a presence to prevent the owners moving machinery out of the plant or, should that be what the owners are planning, stop a scab labour force being moved in.
For their campaign to succeed, Visteon workers need a substantial commitment of solidarity from the labour movement as a whole, in the UK and wider, and, from campaigners and trade unionists in north London, your physical presence on occasions!
Below are several ideas of how you can help support this important struggle for justice and dignity. If you want to discuss any ideas, please contact Vicki Morris, Barnet trades council: publicity@barnettuc.org.uk

Visit the picket, send donations... and target Ford
Messages of support, financial contributions and your physical presence are required urgently and at any time. You can email the workers on visteonoccupation@googlemail.com.

Picket...
Supporters are being asked particularly to join the picket during the night. This is not because the workers are taking it easy – far from it. It’s just that it is naturally harder to maintain a substantial picket over night, and supporters, especially if they go together in a group, can probably manage the occasional stint, while the workers are turning up at some point of almost every day.
If you can commit to doing a four-hour stint on the night pickets go here:

(Don’t be put off if there aren’t many names yet – it’s only just been set up and will fill up in the coming days!)

Rally
Each Saturday from 11am there will be a rally at the factory, Morson Road, EN3 4NQ. After the rally, people will be encouraged to join the pickets for a while or take part in other activities such as leafleting Ford showrooms.
If you can go this Saturday 18 April that would be great; Saturday 25 April has been designated a national support day when there will be a number of activities for people to join in their localities.

Support group and donations
A Ford Visteon workers' support group is helping to coordinate support by sustaining the pickets and publicising the Ford Visteon workers’ struggle. Its website is www.visteonoccupation.org
By agreement with the workers, Haringey Solidarity Group will channel financial support to the pickets through their bank account. Cheques made out to 'Haringey Solidarity Group' or 'HSG' may be sent to HSG, PO Box 2474, London N8 0HW (write Ford Visteon on the back).

Targeting Ford – where you live!
When Visteon was spun off from Ford in 2000 the workers were promised Ford terms and conditions for life.
While for business reasons it is a separate company, Visteon’s fortunes are inextricably linked with those of Ford. Visteon workers are pressing Ford to honour commitments made to the workers in 2000. They are leafleting at Ford showrooms. If you can do this where you live, download the leaflet here.

Material support
If you are visiting the plant, and can spare or lend any of the following, the workers need:
Tents
Sleeping bags
Wood, especially logs, for their fires
Food – things like hot soup would be most welcome! They have barbeques but are getting fed up with burgers and sausages

Raising support – their fight, your fight
Please raise the issue of support for the Visteon workers in your own union and campaigning organisations.
Take a collection. Invite a speaker on the dispute or get in touch for more information. This is going to be a difficult campaign, but it is a vitally important one for the labour movement as a whole, with many important lessons for the fight against r
