The £4 uniform

SCHOOL uniforms will go on sale for an amazing FOUR QUID at Asda this weekend - as credit-crunch families cash in on a supermarket price war.
The entire kit - comprising a 50p polo shirt, a sweatshirt priced £1.75 and trousers or skirt at £1.75 - is being launched after M&S trumpeted a £6.50 uniform.
But that was only to fit kids up to age six. Asda yesterday revealed its gear - bearing the store's George label - will be for pupils up to 12. The uniform is less than half the price of the £9.96 parents had to fork out for similar items last year.
Asda's move comes as other stores also rush to slash the cost of back-to-school gear. A uniform at Woolworths will set families back only slightly more - at £4.50. An Asda spokesman said yesterday: "We believe parents of older or larger children should not be penalised.
"The average family spends more than £320 a year on uniforms for children up to 12. "With the flat rate from George, spend on uniforms could be as low as £32 a year - saving a family up to £290 at a time when many feel the pinch."
Joyce Daly, of the Schoolwear Association, said families would still face shelling out for clothes bearing school crests. But she said: "In a time of economic difficulty it's definitely a good thing to buy basic items so cheaply."
