VICTORY AT NEW ERA CAP!!
The Teamsters is proud to announce that we have reached a tentative settlement with New Era Cap.
We would like to thank the IBT Human Rights Commission, all of the IBT staff, Local Unions and members, as well as supporting organizations and individuals who braved the snow to protest Foot Locker, spent countless hours in Mobile Alabama organizing to support the campaign, made sure laid off New Era workers got thanksgiving dinner, blogged online about the issue, demonstrated on campuses, wrote letters of support, and more!
Below is a summary of the tentative agreement:
* A proposed contract for Mobile workers that includes increased wages and health benefits (raises the floor from $8.75 to $10/hour immediately and significantly increases in each year of the agreement), seniority rights, a grievance procedure, and changes to sick time and paid time off that will allow for a more just and practical point system for New Era workers.
* A strong anti-discrimination/diversity policy that commits New Era Cap to encouraging women and people of color to apply for available positions, an annual review of employment practices to ensure commitment to equal employment opportunity, and a commitment to review this policy with the NAACP.
* A neutrality agreement that ensures New Era Cap will not oppose unionization efforts in its Jackson and Demopolis Alabama facilities and that provides IBT organizers access to workers in company break rooms and cafeterias.
* A process by which a vast majority of terminated workers can be re-hired or accept compensation if they choose not to return. Three termination cases will be determined by arbitration.
