Defending migrant workers' rights

No Sweat and the Polish Society at Sheffield University held a joint meeting to discuss issue of migrant workers' rights.

Daniel Randall from No Sweat spoke first, introducing the themes of No Sweat's 'Solidarity with Migrant Workers' pamphlet. Ben Zacek from the Polish Society then spoke, exploring some of the issues facing young Poles in Britain today. Other Polish Society campaigners gave specific case studies highlighting the exploitation Polish workers face; one Polish student in Sheffield worked 5 night-shifts a week at Tesco in order to afford tuition and accomodation fees. The Polish activists also explained some of the factors inhibiting Polish workers from organising, including a lack of information and a stigma amongst young Poles in Poland itself around truthfully sharing experiences of exploitation they suffered while working on temporary or seasonal contracts in the UK.

The meeting agreed to investigate a number of practical initiatives, including a joint letter from No Sweat and the Polish Society to the Students' Union urging it to produce a 'Know Your Rights At Work' info sheet in Polish for Polish working students. The meeting also agreed to adapt existing Polish language material on workers' rights to distribute in workplaces employing Polish workers, and to deepen links with Unite (TGWU) and the GMB locally, the two trade unions with dedicated Polish workers' organising units.

The No Sweat society at the university meets every other Monday at 7pm in the SU Gallery to plan activities, and currently has a series of meetings planned on alternate Mondays when organising meetings are not taking place. On Monday 5th November, a discussion on the Burmese workers' movement (featuring speakers from the Sheffield Burmese community) is planned, followed by a meeting on the 19th November on organising coffee shop workers, featuring speakers from the IWW and statements from coffee workers themselves. These meetings take place from 7-8:30pm in Seminar Room 1131 in the Arts Tower. No Sweat activists have also been taking part in activity off campus, including leafletting coffee workers with trade union material alongside IWW activists.
