Cambodian trade unionists, London

17/10/2007 - 4:00pm
17/10/2007 - 6:00pm

Three representatives from the Free Trade Union of Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia (FTU) in October are coming to the UK to receive One World Action’s Sternberg Award for their outstanding contribution to development and human rights.

FTU is Cambodia’s largest independent union of garment workers. It brings together 117 smaller affiliated unions working in 230 garment factories and has over 50,000 members, mainly young women. Three FTU leaders have been assassinated in the past few years. In 2004 their President, Chea Vichea was shot and his brother, the current President, Chea Mony has repeatedly expressed fears for his own safety. Despite intimidation and violence the FTU continue to effectively lobby for the implementation of labour standards in textile factories, negotiate on behalf of their members and challenge the worst abuses in court.

The three representatives who will be visiting London are Mr Chea Mony (President), Ms Sokny Say, (International Relations Officer) and Ms Por Chhorthy, (Labour Educator Assistant).

On Wednesday 17th October from 4-6pm we are holding a round table discussion to discuss the current challenges and opportunities facing trade unions in Cambodia. We would be delighted if you could join us for this unique opportunity to meet with activists at the forefront of campaigning for workers rights.
