No Sweat protest against Burberry, Regent Street, 27 January
The Treorchy plant in the Rhondda is due to close in March with the loss of 300 jobs. On Friday 26 January Burberry offered to give the factory to the local community. The company, which is moving production to Chinese sweatshops, met with strong criticism. The unions denounced the move as "a PR stunt".
The No Sweat petition reads:
"We, the undersigned, oppose the closure of Burberry’s Rhondda factory with the loss of 300 unionised jobs.
"We note that Burberry has shifted production to China to take advantage of sweatshop factory conditions and a viciously anti-union state.
"We do not oppose Chinese workers having jobs – all workers need decent work – but we do oppose this loss of jobs and the attack on organised labour in the UK."
